Stronger together

Brian Ridley is a taxi driver in Newton Aycliffe.

When taxi driver Brian Ridley accepted a fare from two women who hailed his private hire minibus he thought nothing of it.

“I had just dropped a fare off and they knocked on my window and asked me to take them home,” he said. “I thought no more about it until a few days later when I received a letter saying they were working for the council and I had contravened the taxi licensing regulations.”

Brian, a taxi driver for 23 years who had never been in trouble before, faced a substantial fine, suspension of his PHV driver’s licence and the loss of his livelihood.

“Obviously I was very concerned,” he said, “but my solicitor was very reassuring. He put me at my ease straightaway by talking to me in language I could understand.”

When the case went to court Brian received an absolute discharge and was ordered to make a small contribution to court costs. Brian said: “It was a huge relief – and I couldn’t have done it without Hewitts. I would recommend them without hesitation.”
