Kay Smith, not her real name, lives in Bishop Auckland.

Kay Smith spent three years in dispute with her local council over a benefits claim. The stress of the case, and the fear of a court appearance, took a terrible toll on her health.

Kay said: “At times it felt as though nobody was listening. They said I had fraudulently claimed benefits and they didn’t seem interested in my explanation.

“It got to the point where I couldn’t sleep and I was afraid to go out. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown.”

In desperation she turned to Hewitts for help. “Having a firm with so much experience on my side was a great comfort,” said Kay. “All at once I could see light at the end of the tunnel – it was such a relief.”

Hewitts represented Kay in court and the claim was resolved to her satisfaction. “I wish I had contacted Hewitts earlier,” she added.

“If anyone else were in my situation I would tell them to do it straight away. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

“I wish I had contacted Hewitts earlier [now] I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”
