The Vento Guidelines (named after the case in which they originated – Vento –v- Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police (2003)) are a set of guidelines used to calculate awards of compensation for injury to feelings to victims of employment based discrimination.
From 6th April 2021 cases presented before the Employment Tribunal which involve a claim for injury to feelings will be subject to revised Vento Guidelines as follows:-
- Lower band (for less serious cases) – £900.00 to £9,100.00
- Middle band (cases that do not merit an award in the upper band) – £9,100.00 to £27,400.00
- Upper band (the most serious cases) – £27,400.00 to £45,600.00
In exceptional cases, claims can exceed the £45,600.00 upper limit, however these cases are likely to be rare and the vast majority of claims involving an award for injury to feelings will fall within the updated Vento Guidelines above.
