A new pilot scheme will begin from 29th January 2024 to allow media attendance in the Family Court for financial remedy proceedings.
The current system includes a journalist being permitted to attend court hearings in the Family Court however, they are not able to report on all matters they observe.
The president of the Family Division provided a review on transparency in the Family Court focusing on public confidence being increased in the Family Justice system, whilst maintaining confidentiality.
The proposed change involves the media being able to publicly report on what they observe in the Family Court, whilst having clear rules of confidentiality for the families involved.
It will be important for those utilising the Family Court system to be protected, when those individuals are placing trust in the Court to make decisions which are in the best interests of the children involved.
The pilot will involve greater access to certain hearings within the financial remedy proceedings and will not include financial dispute resolution hearings. The pilot will begin with covering the Central Family Court, Birmingham and Leeds.
